Shivneri Fort (शिवनेरी किल्ला – जन्मस्थान)
The sacred heart-shaped hill fort of Junnar where Rajmata Jijabai gave birth to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on 19 February 1630.
Historical Origins & Architectural Context
Guarded the ancient Naneghat trade pass for two millennia before serving as the fortified residence of Shahaji Raje and Rajmata Jijabai. Triangular basalt tableland located 2 km west of Junnar town in northern Pune district, flanked by mud walls and vertical rock scarps.
Named after Goddess Shivai Devi—whose blessings Rajmata Jijabai invoked—Shivneri stands as the cradle of Hindavi Swarajya. Its seven formidable gateways, spiked with anti-elephant iron studs, ensured that young Shivba grew up amidst impenetrable security and sovereign inspiration.
“जिजाऊंच्या संस्कारांनी आणि शिवाई देवीच्या आशीर्वादाने शिवनेरीच्या मातीत स्वराज्याचा सूर्य उगवला!”
