Sinhagad Fort (सिंहगड – कोंढाणा)
Immortalized by the supreme sacrifice of Subhedar Tanaji Malusare in the midnight vertical cliff assault of February 1670.
Historical Origins & Architectural Context
Originally associated with Sage Kaundinya, scaled vertically up the sheer Donagiri cliff by Tanaji Malusare and his Mavalas to reclaim the fort from Udaybhan Rathod. Located 35 km southwest of Pune city atop an isolated spur of the Bhuleshwar range with natural vertical basalt cliffs exceeding 40 meters.
Towering over the Khadakwasla backwaters, Sinhagad is more than stone and mortar—it is a living ballad of Maratha valor. On the moonless night of Magh Vadya Navami in 1670, Tanaji Malusare and 300 Mavalas ascended the sheer western precipice, turning an impossible vertical rock face into a gateway of liberation.
“गड आला, पण माझा सिंह गेला! — कोंढाण्याचा सिंहगड करणारा तानाजी मालुसरे यांचा अमर पराक्रम.”
— Historical Powada of Sinhagad • Tribute to Subhedar Tanaji Malusare
