Kirloskar Group (किर्लोस्कर समूह – भारताची पहिली लोखंडी नांगर क्रांती)
Pioneers of indigenous Indian engineering who built India’s first iron plough, first diesel engine, and the visionary industrial township of Kirloskarwadi.
Historical Origins & Architectural Context
Founded by Laxmanrao Kashinath Kirloskar; manufactured India’s first indigenous iron plough (1904) and established Maharashtra’s first planned industrial township at Kirloskarwadi on land granted by the Raja of Aundh. Rooted in Kirloskarwadi (Sangli district) and headquartered in Pune across Kothrud, Hadapsar, and Khadki.
When Indian farmers initially feared that an iron plough might ‘poison the soil,’ Laxmanrao Kirloskar personally ploughed barren land for two years until bumper crops proved indigenous metallurgy right. In 1910, on snake-infested wasteland near Kundal station, he built Kirloskarwadi—India’s second modern industrial township.

Cultural Significance & Enduring Legacy
Under Padma Bhushan Shantanurao Kirloskar, the group expanded from Sangli to Pune, laying the institutional foundation that transformed Pune into the Detroit of the East.
Powers global water management, agriculture, green energy, and naval propulsion; Kirloskar pumps irrigate over 35% of India’s arable farmland and cool iconic global skyscrapers. Built India’s first indigenous centrifugal pump (1926), first electric motor, and first diesel engine (1946) under Shantanurao Kirloskar, catalysing Pune’s rise as an auto-engineering hub.
