Historical Origins & Architectural Context

Initiated by local Koli chieftain Ram Patil as a wooden stockade and later rebuilt in lead-and-lime mortar basalt by Malik Ambar and the Siddis of Janjira. Oval basalt island spanning 22 acres in the Arabian Sea, 5 km south of Murud in Raigad district along the Konkan coast.

Battered by Arabian Sea swells for five centuries yet standing unbreached, Murud-Janjira is a masterpiece of littoral military engineering. Its mortar—blended from lime, jaggery, and molten lead—has withstood both monsoon tempests and naval bombardments by the Portuguese, British, and Marathas.

Cultural Significance & Enduring Legacy

Inside the salty sea spray, two deep rock-cut reservoirs (40 to 60 feet deep) yield pure, sweet drinking water year-round—the decisive hydrological secret that allowed the garrison to outlast multi-year sieges.

Accessible exclusively via traditional wooden wind-powered sailboats from Rajapuri jetty, supporting hundreds of local maritime boatmen families. Fortified by 22 rounded sea bastions, an concealed entrance gate invisible from 50 meters away, and two freshwater lakes amidst the salty Arabian Sea.
