Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve (ताडोबा-अंधारी व्याघ्र प्रकल्प – चंद्रपूर)
The ‘Jewel of Vidarbha’—Maharashtra’s oldest and largest National Park, boasting one of the planet’s highest wild Bengal Tiger densities amidst teak and bamboo forests.
Historical Origins & Architectural Context
Named after the revered Gond tribal chieftain-deity ‘Taru’ (worshipped beside Tadoba Lake) and the meandering Andhari River that sustains the dry-deciduous teak ecosystem. Located 45 km north of Chandrapur city and 140 km south of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport, Nagpur.
In the golden light of a Vidarbha dawn, the alarm calls of Spotted Deer and Langurs echo through cathedral-like bamboo groves around Telia and Tadoba lakes. Suddenly, the stripes of a Royal Bengal Tiger part the tall grass—making Tadoba-Andhari one of the most reliable wild tiger habitats on Earth.

Cultural Significance & Enduring Legacy
Beyond the apex predators, Tadoba’s rocky caves and Mahua groves shelter Sloth Bears, packs of whistling Wild Dogs (Dholes), Indian Gaur, and the elusive Black Panther.
Across Moharli, Kolara, Navegaon, Zari, and Pangdi gates, Tadoba trains hundreds of local tribal naturalists, Gypsy drivers, and eco-lodge hospitality teams. Spanning 1,727 sq km of core and buffer zones; famous for legendary tigresses like Maya, Madhuri, and Chhoti Tara, alongside crocodile-rich Tadoba Lake and Erai Dam.
