Chitale Bandhu Mithaiwale (चितळे बंधू मिठाईवाले – बाकरवडी सम्राट)
From a revolutionary buffalo-milk enterprise in Sangli to Pune’s undisputed cultural icon—makers of the world-famous Chitale Bakarwadi and Amrakhand.
Historical Origins & Architectural Context
Started in Bhilawadi (Sangli) in 1939 delivering pure milk to Pune; Raghunathrao Chitale founded Chitale Bandhu Mithaiwale in 1950 at Deccan Gymkhana & Bajirao Road. Flagship heritage stores at Deccan Gymkhana and Shanipar on Bajirao Road in Pune, backed by mega dairy plants at Bhilawadi and Ranjangaon.
For decades, the famous Pune joke about Chitale Bandhu’s afternoon recess (1 PM to 4 PM) was a badge of authentic Puneri character. Today, while their modern outlets and global exports run non-stop, a box of spicy-sweet, poppy-seed-and-coconut-filled Chitale Bakarwadi remains the mandatory passport gift of every Punekar traveling abroad.
