Sindhudurg Fort (सिंधुदुर्ग जलदुर्ग – मालवण)
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s sovereign naval headquarters built on Kurte Island using 70,000+ kilos of molten lead.
Historical Origins & Architectural Context
Engineered over three years by Hiroji Indulkar across 48 acres of Kurte rocky island to establish Maratha naval supremacy over European and Siddi fleets. Surrounded by submerged razor-sharp reef rocks off Malvan harbour in Sindhudurg district that prevented enemy warships from approaching.
Recognizing that ‘he who rules the waves commands the coast,’ Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj personally selected the reef-ringed Kurte Island off Malvan in 1664. Over 3,000 artisans poured molten lead into the underwater basalt crevices to forge a sea-wall capable of defying ocean fury.
“चौऱ्याऐंशी बंदरांत हा जंजिरा अठरा टोपीकरांच्या उरावर बांधला—मराठ्यांच्या आरमाराचा स्वाभिमान सिंधुदुर्ग!”
— Maratha Armar Chronicles • Founding of Sindhudurg (1664 CE)
