Solapuri Chaddar & Terry Towels (सोलापुरी चादर व टॉवेल – प्रथम GI)
Maharashtra’s very first Geographical Indication (GI) product—world-famous Jacquard cotton bedsheets and ultra-absorbent terry towels woven by Padmashali artisans.
Historical Origins & Architectural Context
Pioneered by migrant Padmashali master weavers who combined double-cloth Jacquard geometry with long-staple Deccan cotton to create reversible all-weather bedsheets. Located in southeastern Maharashtra’s black-cotton soil belt at the tri-state junction of Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Telangana.
Before ‘Geographical Indication’ became a household phrase in India, Solapur led the way in 2005 by securing Maharashtra’s first-ever GI registration. A classic Solapuri Chaddar is legendary in Indian households—often outlasting the furniture it covers.
“उन्हाळ्यात थंड आणि हिवाळ्यात उबदार—महाराष्ट्राचे पहिले जीआय मानांकन मिळवणारी अस्सल सोलापुरी चादर!”
