Serum Institute of India (सिरम इन्स्टिट्यूट ऑफ इंडिया – पुणे)
The world’s largest vaccine manufacturer by volume—born on a Hadapsar stud farm in 1966, protecting 65% of the planet’s children with affordable immunizations.
Historical Origins & Architectural Context
Founded in 1966 by Padma Bhushan Dr. Cyrus Poonawalla, who donated retired racehorses to extract life-saving anti-tetanus and anti-snake-venom serums at a fraction of imported prices. Sprawling verdant biotech campuses at Hadapsar and Manjari Special Economic Zone in eastern Pune.
When Dr. Cyrus Poonawalla decided in 1966 not to build sports cars and instead turn his family’s Hadapsar horse-breeding farm into an affordable serum laboratory, few imagined that eastern Pune would become the biological shield of humanity.
