Panhala Fort (पन्हाळगड – करवीर छत्रपतींची राजधानी)
The largest fort of the Deccan with 7 km of fortifications, seat of Maharani Tarabai and starting point of the legendary Pavan Khind escape.
Historical Origins & Architectural Context
Witnessed Baji Prabhu Deshpande and Shiva Kashid’s immortal sacrifice during the 1660 siege, and later served as Maharani Tarabai’s capital of Kolhapur State. Triangular plateau spanning 14 km in circumference overlooking the Sahyadri passes connecting Kolhapur in the Deccan to Rajapur on the Konkan coast.
Draped in perennial Sahyadri mist, Panhala combines Indo-Islamic arches, Shilahara stone bastions, and Maratha military ingenuity. Its Andhar Bavadi—a three-story subterranean fortress built around a drinking water source—ensured that even if an enemy poisoned outside wells, the citadel remained self-sustaining.
“पन्हाळगडावरून विशाळगडाकडे निघालेली ती आषाढाची रात्र—बाजीप्रभू देशपांडेंच्या रक्ताने पावन झालेली घोडखिंड!”
— Karveer Rajya Chronicle • The Escape from Panhala (July 1660)
