Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga Temple (श्री भीमाशंकर ज्योतिर्लिंग)
The 6th sacred Jyotirlinga nestled inside a cloud-forested Sahyadri wildlife sanctuary at the origin of the Bhima River.
Historical Origins & Architectural Context
Celebrated in the Shiva Purana as the site where Lord Shiva vanquished Tripurasura; the Nagara-style shikhara and sabhamandap were built by Peshwa statesman Nana Phadnavis. Situated on the sharp western edge of the Sahyadri escarpment in Ambegaon/Khed taluka, 110 km northwest of Pune.
Set inside an ancient sacred grove (Devrai) where monsoon clouds drift right through the temple courtyard, Bhimashankar is both a cosmic Jyotirlinga and the cradle of the Bhima River—which later becomes the sacred Chandrabhaga at Pandharpur.
“यं डाकिनीशाकिनीकासमाजे निषेव्यमाणं पिशिताशनैश्च। सदैव भीमादिपदप्रसिद्धं तं शंकरं भक्तहितं नमामि॥”
— Dwadasha Jyotirlinga Stotram • Adi Shankaracharya on Bhimashankar
